If I can't get this fixed before tomorrow I have to walk into town to get it looked at. (Which I really don't want to do after getting hit by a car) any help reasonable enough to understand is appreciated. (I'm not a tec wizard)
So I recently turned off my computer from the mains completely (not on standby at all) and both my monitor and hard drive failed when I turned it back on.
The hard drive has never been dropped or opened/tampered with.
My computer has been having issues starting up for months. It will start up fine and then once on the lock screen appears it will become really really slow.
I have reinstalled windows in the recent past and installed it onto my SSD. note* I did not wipe my hard drive.
I had a message saying there was a failure in my hard drive. I restarted to trouble-shoot and now it will not be detected in my BIOS on any sata cable or port. However this can't be the case. It can't be undetected as It would have no affect on my computer if it was undetected. *see below*
note* The hard drive still receives power, spins up, displaces heat well, sounds like it is still spinning at 7200rpm and I can hear the arm move when the system attempts to boot.
The strange thing is that windows is installed on my SSD and the PC starts up normally when I remove the hard drive completely from the computer. But Windows will give me a fatal error message and then not start at all if the hard drive is connected and powered... My Boot SSD has the highest priority in start up so in order to receive that message the HDD must have a higher priority than the Boot Drive. Right? So in order for that to happen the hard drive must still be being read.
This leads me to believe that the possible reasons are for it to be a virus that is affecting start-up in a major way, a internal software issue (there are no drivers for this drive), a error in the hardware of the drive or a error in the drive's coding. 3 of these can be returned by warranty 1 however can not.
I don't mind claiming warranty but need to know if there is a chance that this possible virus has made it's way into any of my SSD cards As my computer still sometimes has the same issues when starting up. Even without the defective hard drive - This is my reason for the post!
The drive is still in warranty which is why I want to find out if it is a virus before I send it back.
So what do you think? How would I check the drive for a virus if it cannot be started up on a computer? or should I just claim my warranty and re-download all my items?
The Item in question: The 1TB version of this http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_barracuda_es.pdf
My stuff: I use malware bytes, super anti spyware, defragment and check for faults frequently with full scans. (However never in safe mode)
