Have a boot issue with an Acer Aspire V5. Tech support (India) said I had a bad HDD. I replaced the 1TB HDD with a 256 Samsung SSD, 850EVO. It wont accept the system restore data. Do I have to go back to a 1TB HDD?

The SSD won't accept the factory restore data because it's capacity (only 256GB) is not sufficient for the amount of data that needs to be written to it.

A clean install of "vanilla" Windows 7 from a Microsoft DVD would easily fit on the SDD, but a factory recovery installation includes much more on top of that such as manufacturer's utilities & 'bloatware', factory recovery data on a second partition etc.

Of course, if you could afford to buy a 1TB SSD instead then the factory recovery discs would work fine.

But much cheaper option is to buy a Windows 7 DVD & Licence from Amazon India and install that on your new SSD. Then get Windows drivers for your PC model from Acer's website.

Phil: I understand and then don't since the windows 8 SW should only be about 20GB. It doesn't make sense (dollars and mental) to spend the cost for a 1TB SSD on a $800 general purpose notebook. We will just go back to a 1TB HDD and upgrade by going to a 7200 RPM drive from the 5400 RPM and be happy with that. Thanks for confirming that the SSD is too small. It was worth a try. FYI, I see windows 8 and 10 notebooks for sale all the time with a 128 SSD drive and or a 256 SSD drive. Something is not quite right.
