HDD transfer SSD storage amount

Hey Guys,

I know there are hundreds of threads on here about this issue, but I thought before I make the leap I may as well make sure.

Firstly, I'm currently running a laptop with a 1tb hard drive and looking to switch to a 500gb SSD. I'm a little bit concerned about whether the SSD will be big enough. I've only used up 250gb of data on my C drive, yet on my computer it is only saying that I have 624gb of total storage despite it being 1tb. I imagine this is due to some kind of formatting, but all I'd like to know is whether a SSD will also require a large amount of space 400gb~? before I even think about adding my 250gb of my own data.

Also would it be useful to bring across my D & E drives, Recovery & HP Tools respectively? Can't I just a manual back-up/restore on an external HDD instead of need to partition the SSD. I guess the HP tools can also be downloaded from the HP website.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Joe

I believe you're working with a 750 GB HDD and not a 1 TB HDD. The total disk-space of that disk is reflected as 698 GB which would be the total disk-space for a 750 GB HDD.
Are you sure that's a 1 TB HDD?

In any event, the disk contains about 228 GB of data so there should be no problem cloning over those contents to your 500 GB SSD.

I've just checked and it turns out that it is only 750gb. To be fair it's been a while since I bought it! Thanks for your advice.
