I've recently purchased a WD Blue 2TB and a WD Blue 4TB. I am certain both arrived with a damaged head but I want to make sure before sending it back.
They both make quiet but worrying noises when reading/writing to random places(but these could normal) but they both make loud screeching noises when powering down the PC. Neither of these issues is present on my old WD blue 1TB. Thus I doubt the problem(and the noise) is that the drives, as an emergency, move the head back to a default position when the power is cut to them.

you have verified that it is definitely these drives making this noise?
by actually disconnecting them one at a time and ensuring that the noise only stopped when both were disconnected, but still happened with either in place?

if this is the case and it continues when also connected to any other system your options are;
  • return the drives to the retailer purchased from for a replacement
  • or RMA them to the manufacturer for a diagnostic and repair or replacement

Yes I have, they were tested one by one. The only other storage device connected was an NVME ssd.
