hey guys

Can I use a HDMI to VGA active adapter for my "android TV box"? My android TV box is actually a droidBOX T8-s and has an HDMI port so I want to connect it to my VGA monitor. Does anyone if HDMI to VGA active adapters work with Android TV boxes?

Thanks

1) Signals like VGA have standards that products are supposed to meet to work. In general, just look at the comments for a product to see if it's working for most people.

2) BTW, it's not "much more complicated" the other way. It's about the same. This uses a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) whereas going from...

You would have to use an active (powered) HDMI to VGA converter. This is because HDMI is digital, and VGA is analog. Thus it would have to run the signal through a DAC (Digital to Analog converter) the same way it happens for DVI-I (which takes the DVI-D signal, runs it through a DAC to produce the VGA. Then both sets of pins are available as a DVI-I output though the VGA "adapter" connects only to the analog pins).

You can look at Amazon, Monoprice etc but make sure the quality is there. many of these devices are poorly made.

Thanks for the link...the one you suggest says it's not a bi-directional converter and it only transfers signal from HDMI to VGA.. What's that about and does it matter that it is not bi-directional?

It just means it will only work for HDMI conversion to VGA (not VGA to HDMI which is much more complicated)

If its possible to get connected the one listed should do it.

Ultimately it's going to depend on how picky your monitor is acceptingca converted signal.

Thanks for that.

How would I know if a monitor maybe too pick yaccepting a converted signal ? I have a SyncMaster 940N monitor which has only a VGA port

2) BTW, it's not "much more complicated" the other way. It's about the same. This uses a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) whereas going from VGA to HDMI would use an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter). A VGA would probably need a separate power source though, and it appears the HDMI output can supply enough power to run the DAC.

A DAC is also what you have for VGA outputs on graphics cards. Usually it taps off a DVI output, goes through the DAC then ends up as a VGA output. If both sets of pins are present it's called "DVI-I" though when you connect with the VGA adapter it ONLY connects to the VGA/analog pins, and if you use a DVI cable it only connects to the DVI/digital pins.
