I have an EVGA Geforce 780 graphics card and a regular 1080p monitor. In a pc build video i was watching (the newegg one) the guy used an hdmi cable to connect the graphics card to the monitor.... I don't have an hdmi cable, any alternatives? i have a bunch of cables that came with the monitor but none are hdmi

Have a look at what inputs you have on the monitor, and what outputs you have on the graphics card.
You can connect DVI to DVI, DVI to HDMI, HDMI to DVI, HDMI to HDMI or DisplayPort to DisplayPort (mini or full size).
These are all digital connections that require no active adapter.
Note that if the monitor supports a refresh rate greater than 60 Hz, this will not be supported with HDMI on either end of the connection and it will revert to 60 Hz.
You can connect DVI-I to VGA or VGA to VGA, but these are analog and lower quality.
