hdmi connected tv for computer moniter

I use my tv as a monitor, but when I try to go into set-up for motherboard or mb bios I get nothing but a black screen. do I need to hook it up with another cord or does hdmi cable connect suppose to show all boot up functions? I am so confused.

The tv might not support low resolutions. What other video in ports does the tv have, beside HDMI?
