hdmi digital not plugged in

I can hook up my nexus (android) (via HDMI cable) to my TV and use the TV remote to control sound but when I hook up (via HDMI) from my windows 7 laptop I only get sound from the lap top I checked the settings to change and says digital HDMI not plugged in
