HDMI not working?

I'm using a VGA cable to connect my monitor to my PC, but since I have an HDMI cable, I wanted to use that instead (both my monitor and my PC have HDMI ports). However, when I tried connecting the two, it wouldn't work. My monitor would recognize my PC being plugged in (the screen remained black). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing? or is there a problem with the cable?

Did you turn the PC off, connect the cable then start up the PC?

Is the HDMI from your PC from your motherboard or graphics card?

Since I have an APU build and no graphics card, I'm connecting from my motherboard. The PC was off (though the monitor was turned on) when I took off the VGA and connected the HDMI.

It should work. Maybe a faulty HDMI port?

My monitor: BenQ G2400WDLCD (I think it's from 2007)
