HDMI picture fine and sound very quiet

I hooked up my laptop to my hdtv through hdmi and the picture comes through fine, but the sound is not coming through unless my tv is turned all the way up and still then the sound is very quiet. You can hear white noise because its so loud. Is my hdmi cord messed up? Or my laptops hdmi port? or something else?

Make sure that the volume on the laptop OS and playback software is turned up.
