HDMI Signal Loss?

Ok so I have the Gateway FHD2400 that I bought a few months ago and it rocks absolutely but there is a problem with it which annoys me to no end.

I do a lot of reformats/OS installs because I like to mess around with Linux and OS X. I have the monitor connected via a DVI to HDMI cable so I get the 1:1 scaling, but whenever I use the HDMI connection it always loses the signal during certain scenarios. For example if I boot my computer up and the monitor is not turned on, I cannot get the monitor to display something from the computer unless I reboot it with a hard restart. Also during different load times when booting from a CD I will get the same problem. Is there anyway to fix this or is this a problem inherent to HDMI?

It's still happening with ATI cards using the latest driver as of 1/22/2009. There is a little free program available that solves the problem by requesting the display be turned off and then on again -- forcing the ati card to reinitialize and getting the information needed from the hdtv hdmi or dvi port to reconnect to it. I set it up to be executed via a hotkey -- you can use any of a number of free hotkey programs -- in my case I used the keyboard driver for my cordless keyboard to assign the hotkey (logitech itouch keyboard).

Another method is to purchase a hardware device called "dvi detective", that retains the information so the card thinks the tv's port is still on -- but why spend the 60 bucks and have to buy another cable to hook it up (it goes between your video card and the hdtv) if you don't have to?
