HDMI sound from Asus Mobo

After not being able to get a beep out of the HDMI port of my Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3, I came to the conclusion that my board's HDMI is broken, and I'll replace it with a new board of the same type. I'd like to get a confirmation that what I'm trying to do is possible with this motherboard:
The HDMI port of the MoBo is connected to the Receiver. This should get me sound (incl. surround sound for games and movies). I do not have a TV, but instead use a 30" LG Flatron W3000H display, driven by a NVidia GTX9800+.

My question: Is this possible, or is there a problem?

I have built 4 computers with Asus MoBo's, and didn't have issues until now, so I'm contemplating to give that MoBo the benefit of the doubt and re-order it.

My current setup:
Mobo Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3, with Realtek ALC892. Going to replace this with MoBo of same type.
Core i7 2700K (has iGPU HD3000)
NVidia GTX9800+, drives a LG Flatron W3000H display (no sound)
Windows 7 64bit
AVReceiver, plays sound when connected to MoBo through SPDIF(optical), but not when connected through HDMI. This receiver plays HDMI-sound fine when connected to a Dell laptop (E6420)
