Please forgive what I suspect is a newb question. I was a PC support tech a lifetime ago and my hardware knowledge is badly out of date.

I'm attempting to use my (older) monitor with a desktop PC and a laptop using a KVM switch. The monitor's native resolution is 2560x1440, but it only has a DVI input.

The problem is that I'm losing resolution. When going through the switch and using an HDMI to DVI cable, both the PC and the laptop only detect a max of 1920x1080. Without the switch, my PC sees 2560x1440 using a DVI to DVI cable. Using that same cable direct from the PC, I only get 1920x1080.

I keep thinking there must be a cable or adapter that will make this work, but the only ones I can find that state anything about resolution only go up to 1080p.

Here's the switch I'm using. It supports 2560x1440 at 144hz, and 4k at 60 hz.

Any help will be much appreciated!

To the best of my searching there is no HDMI to DVI dual link adapter. There are some display port to DVI dual link adapters.

While DVI can do 1440p60, it requires all of the pins, known as dual link mode.

HDMI is basically backwards compatible electrically with DVI, but it only uses the pins for DVI single link to work, which reduces maximum resolution. There's no way around this as far as I know, so you're always going to be limited to 1440p30 maximum with HDMI to DVI

I ran into this recently trying to do the opposite, and get a 1440p HDMI monitor to work from the DVI out on a GPU. It did not work correctly.

I think you're only real option for this is to not use this KVM. If you could get one that does display port you may have better luck, as DP to DVI adapters often will work for this purpose.
