HDMI to DVI Cable technically explained

I bought a samsung monitor recently with just vga and hdmi slot and I prefer actually DVI for the connection to my pc, also because then I can use the HDMI slot for my tv, to connect it to my pc.

So I saw these cables that would use my hdmi slot on my monitor but have an DVI end. What do I get then technically? Do I actually get a DVI signal then or how does that work? Like for example for the HZ. HDMI cant I guess use 144HZ. So would that be possible then with this cable?

Hello... Basically the GPU is making a digital signal compatible to current Monitor standards/communications... so the connectors are wired the same for the HDMI and DVI cables... and the little wires in the cable will transmit the Display signals to the properly wired connectors on the monitor... so the cable construction needs to be able to handle it. As things become digitally faster, so does the construction of the cable.

Wiki will have the Charts and Specs for each current/future standard for you to look over...

Hello... They will have/carry the same digital video signal... that's all it provides... all other HDMI commands/signals or audio will not be transmitted... I buy them for people and use them when you just need a different hook up for a monitor. B /

At 144HZ the best cable connection would be "Display Port" 144HZ and larger display resolutions will require stricter cable construction and materials for the faster and larger data signals.
 


What do you mean with the same? Do I get technically then a DVI signal into my monitor? Can I get 144hz with it then? Because hdmi 1.2 can not as far as i know, deliever 144hz, while DVI can do. thanks for the answer so far :)
 


There is no such thing as a "DVI signal" or "hdmi signal" they are both digital, they send zeros and ones. Max bandwidth as in how much data they can send may be different between dvi and the different versions of hdmi but the signal is the same.

Basically it is a cable made of multi components, signal paths and multi circuits running together... they can and will interfere with each other as FREQ goes up... so "standards" are created for construction and predictable performance.

HDMI is a "royalty" paid license... and they are moving to a "one Cable does all design" with many devices.
Display port was created for "free' access and geared more towards Display use... "daisy chaining" is a nice easy install feature.
DVI is just a Older display standard between the time Analog to digital GPU/Monitor changes were being made.
