HDMI to DVI not working

I'm trying to connect my android box (M8S) HDMI output to my DVI input on my Samsung 2233SW monitor (only have vga and dvi) . When it boots up (M8S) I see a flicker of the menu for the TV box a couple of times and then it shuts off and gives me a "check cable connection". I have tested the HDMI output on the box to my TV and that's working properly. My monitor is HDCP compliant also. Could this be a problem with the android box? I manually set different resolutions on the box to try also which didn't work. I'm going to check the cable on something else HDMI to make sure that's working also.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Solution

I Have a work around but I am not happy with it.

I'd love to know if you have found a simpler solution so please post if you do.

Otherwise, here's situation as I see it and the work around:

I believe the issue was with HDCP...
Nowhere in the settings do I see the options to select dvi or vga. The monitor has an "auto" feature which will select the input when it senses the signal. I'll look more into it when I get home today again. As far as I seen there wasn't an option for selecting which input I wanted. The cable I'm using is from Amazon (Blue Rigger high speed cable). I'm sending it back today so I'll try one more time with it.

Would there be any issue with the android box sending the signal through this adaptor by chance?

I believe the issue was with HDCP and the handshake not being able to take place between the source and display with the adapter in the mix.

I was able to work around the issue by using an HDMI slitter similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-ST122HD4KU-2-Port-Splitter-Built/dp/B00M3NZT7G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1477342818&sr=8-2&keywords=startech+hdmi+splitter

Apparently these splitters have the known (unintended?) capability to strip out HDCP.

I've ordered various cables/adapters/splitters to see what works in order to keep the setup as simple as possible and as low cost as possible.

Nothing I've ordered that acts as a single conversion from HDMI to DVI has worked yet.
Here's what I've tried so far beyond the couple of simple adapters I've used:
