i just brought a monitor and wanted to do a dual monitor setup but the monitor doesn't have a dvi port will using hdmi to dvi work?

Yes, that will work. The only catch is that a DVI-to-HDMI cable will strip out the digital audio carried by HDMI, so you will have to figure out some other way of getting audio ..like using a speaker or headphones

Yes it should work, I have a monitor with DVI port and I am using DVI to HDMI with it. As jbrown156 said you wont get the audio since DVI is just for Video.
