Yes, HDMI and DVI are both digital so it's preferred over HDMI to VGA. Should be cheaper too.

(Be careful with picking which end is male or female - it will determine whether the adapter will be at the monitor, or at the laptop. Most people prefer the adapter be at the monitor.)
The one catch is that HDMI encodes both video and sound. So if you use a HDMI to DVI adapter, the computer may cease sending sound over the laptop's speakers and audio out port. If this happens, you need to dig through the video/sound options and direct the audio output to the correct device.
