would a 1080p 144hz monitor display 144hz if i connect it to an hdmi cable and a vga cable connected to an hdmi splitter connected to a hdmi 2.0 port? i know hdmi 2.0 is fast enough for 144hz, but the hdmi port on the monitor isn't 2.0, and with all the adapters and connecting 2 different cables to the monitor, would it work?

kind of like this

so to be able to get 144hz i would need an active adapter.
*sighs*
they're so expensive.
well anyway, thanks for the answer.
would i be able to achieve 144hz if i used this hdmi to dp adapter and then this dp to dvi adapter(because i can't find hdmi to dvi)?

um, no.
What GPU do you have?

i have a gtx 1050 in a laptop that only has a hdmi 2.0 port and a monitor that can only achieve 144hz through dvi

Question from sasuke10125 : "hdmi to display to dvi = 144hz?"

i'm so confused about the refresh rate. I'm looking everywhere and i'm finding that hdmi 2.0 is capped at 120hz 1080p or that hdmi 1.4 is capped at 1080p 120hz and that 2.0 can do 144hz. i need to all these converters because i have an acer gn246hl which has dvi-dl, vga and an hdmi version that doesn't support anything over 60hz, i'm also finding that i do need an active converter for hdmi to dp and dp to dvi-dl, and that hdmi to dvi-dl doesn't exist. i think i'll just return the monitor and get another one instead of adapters and get the high refresh rate i want whether it's 120 or 144hz. do you have any suggestions for a cheap 144hz monitor with hdmi 2.0?

Use Display Port. HDMI bandwidth depends on the monitor.

i can't. i have a laptop with only hdmi 2.0 output. hdmi bandwidth depends on the hdmi version on the monitor. i want to know what version is needed for 144hz if any at all

Let's un-confuse things. The refresh rate is limited by your laptop, it's GTX1050 GPU and the HDMI output. There's no converters that will magically change the video output to a higher refresh rate, than what can be provided by your laptop. So, just forget about the the converter thing, it won't work. The best you can do with your current laptop is to connect it to the Acer monitor with an HDMI cable. Then, be sure that the monitor and the laptop are both set to the same maximum refresh rate.

i know that my laptop won't be able to reach 144fps for most games. i just want to know if hdmi 1.4 and 2.0 are enough for 144hz. hdmi 1.4 because the monitors with hdmi 2.0 are more expensive, hdmi 2.0 because that's the port on my laptop.

EDIT:
according to dell support, hdmi 1.4 will only support up to 60hz at 1080p, but hdmi 2.0 will reach 144hz.
