HDMI vs DisplayPort

Solution

I believe either would be fine for that as HDMI has been able to do 144 1080p since 1.3 and we're on 2.0b now so your monitor and GPU should have at least 2.0a. Personally I would use HDMI because it's on everything and...
This depends on your monitor. If it has Display Port connectivity, then use that. It supports highest resolutions and refresh rates.
Dual link DVI can be used also. Drawback - DVI doesn't include audio signal.
HDMI - is highly dependent on HDMI version supported by gpu, monitor and cable.

i am going to use a 144hz 1080p monitor that supports both HDMI and DisplayPort. i am also using a Headset so sound coming from the monitor itself does not matter. What should i use if i want to play at 1080p with 144hz?

Personally I would use HDMI because it's on everything and you can use it as an emergency cable for other things if needs be. Plus it can do 1440p 144, 1080 240 and 4K 60 and I doubt you'll be upgrading to a 240 1440p or 4K over 60 for a while.
