Hello!

Brief explanation:
I'm currently using a laptop since I move around alot but when I am at home I would like to plug my laptop into a monitor on my desk and put my laptop somewhere else, just not on my desk with me.

Question:
I was wondering what should I use hdmi or dvi? I read somewhere that you have to keep your laptop open to have hdmi use your screen or something like that. What would be better to use hdmi or dvi and do I have to keep my screen open? Need some advice 😀

Thanks for any reply! It'd really help me in my decision.

Solution
Most laptops only have HDMI as an output because the connector is smaller. DVI might be available on a docking station. HDMI has the capability to carry audio that DVI does not have. Cables up to about 10M are available for both types of interfaces.

Either will be fine they both do the same thing hdmi would be better if you have speakers in your monitor you want to use as hdmi can send sound dvi will not.

Do this to be able to close the laptop.

Go into, Control panel, Power Management, Advanced mode, you'll see a setting for Actions on Close Lid. It'll let you choose between Sleep, Suspend, Hibernate, or Do Nothing. Set that to Do Nothing and you should be able to close the lid while windows stays active.

Would the video quality be similar on both since Id like to game? also if my monitor has a audio pass through would the hdmi connection allow me to plug my headphones into the monitor and get sound as if i plugged it into the laptop?

They are exactly the same when it comes to quality they both send the same digital signal. Not sure about the last part i would imagine you could yes.
