Hi there,

As with most external drives I've ever had, this one has just surrendered itself - problem : I never learn and don't have backups of all my data!

Symptoms: no life whatsoever when plogged: no light, sound, noticeable movement inside - obviously no detection on the computer end.

Usually when this happens, I just pull the case apart and stick the drive into a SATA dock and pull off the data. This one however doesn't have a sata socket inside - only the USB cable socket welded directly onto the disk......

So I have no idea how to proceed. I have basic some computer hardware knowledge / competence but have never gone inside components before. If necessary and if anyone could point me towards some good advice I'd be happy to give it a go!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any advice - whether directly or via another source.

Cheers

Welcome to the forums!

There's probably not much you can do if that's how it's connected and no SATA interface. Sometimes replacing the PCB which houses the controller ICs can help revive the drive.

Maybe a diode issue and no power therefore no light no sound no movement. I think @fzabkar is the one to ask to kindly tell us what he thinks about it when he can.

If the data is absolutely necessary you would have to look into professional recovery with the necessary know-how and tools although the cost would easily go into 3 or 4 digit numbers so and it's a matter of whether you're willing to spend money to get it back or not.
