I'm confused about why a 720p HDTV costs more than an LCD monitor with a resolution of 1280 by 1024. Is it just the viewing angle and the size?

A few other things as well, such as brightness, and the inputs (HDMI and component inputs aren't standard on monitors, but they are on TVs)

Also, does it have built in intelligence for picture conversion 4:3->16:9 stretch? All the OSD, more powerful speakers, etc. You are right that picture and resolution wise the monitor is better, but it is also missing many basic TV features.

Are you referring to models which have the same screen size?
Larger screens add to the cost... most LCD/Plasma TV's are 37" or greater, while a 1280x1024 19" is well, 19"...
