Headphone mic not working

I checked the headphones on a different computer to make sure they aren't broken.

I have verified that its set to default and not muted/low volume

I've updated//deleted//reinstalled the drivers (realtek) with no luck

when i select "listen to this device" i can hear myself talking.

this started after windows update. not sure if related.

EDIT-FIXED i rolled back the windows update and its now working. however. this does not solve the frustration, why would this happen in the first place?
