Headphone/sound issues - speech can't be heard

I have a problem with a new PC build, when i connect my headphones to the computer and listen to a video, only the background sound (music etc.) can be heard but not when people are speaking.
I am completely bewildered by what the cause could be.
when I plug the headphones to the screen or use the screens speakers it works fine.

Specs:
Case: NZXT S340
M.Board: Asus Rog strix B350
G.card: Sapphire rx 580 nitro+

You likely have your speakers set to 5.1 surround instead of 2.0 Stereo mode.

Looking through the windows audio controls, i found that it believes that my Headphones are Speakers, I think that this might be the problem.

Go to "Control Panel > Sound > Recording > Listen" and check which option is chosen for "Playback through this device".
