Question Headphones detected. no sound coming from them. only through hdmi.

My pc is not outputting any sound from any line in port in the pc. the front and back ports both work, when i insert some headphones in them they are detected normally.
sound comes out normally when the audio output device is set to hdmi. HOWEVER if i switch to the headphones then sound stops coming out. windows shows that sound is coming out normally from the headphones yet i cant hear anything the headphones work normally and i tried them on multiple devices. ive tried reinstalling all audio drivers graphics drivers. i even removed the gpu and tried without it and got same result. the microphone also does not detect any sound input. this only happens in the line in devices and on hdmi the sound goes out normally. this started happening 2 days ago after pc froze and i had to remove the gpu and reinsert it so it stops freezing. i suspect the psu not being able to deliver enough power however im not facing any psu related issues so im not quite sure. any ideas?

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Make and model headphones? Any adapters involved?

Could be TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) related. Some mismatch perhaps.

OS: windows 10 Pro 21H2 build 19044.1645
Hardware:
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.71 GHz
RAM: 2x8GB ddr4 hyperx 2400mhz memory
GPU: MSI GTX 960 Gaming 4G
Motherboard: MSI b150m Mortar
PSU: Cougar 650 watts (around 5 years of use by today)
whole pc has been used for around 5 years. headset is eblue gaming pro headset with 2 line in cables one for mic and one trrs for sound. The headset is working and ive confirmed it by testing on many other devices. sound works from tv so my only solution is to play the headset into the tv but i cannot use the mic. when i plug in the headset in both front and back audio jacks the headset gets detected. i can set it as default in sound control panel and tried disabling all other sources to make sure and still no sound at all. all i can hear form the headset is a very quiet and low frequency buzz sound

my bad my headphone is trs 1 cable for mic and a separate cable for headset + it was working 2 days ago and it suddenly stopped working after pc randomly froze and crashed
maybe the audio card on the motherboard is the culprit here

Look in Reliability History and Event Viewer. Either one or both may have captured some error code, warning, or informational event related to audio.

However any other events "2 days ago" need to be looked at.

Try running the built in Windows Troubleshooters. The troubleshooters may find and fix something.

Failing that try "sfc /scannow" and "dism".

thank you for your help. after trying out almost anything i decided it was time to take the pc for service and it turned out to be that the motherboard audio was broken. 2 ways to fix were to use the hdmi audio but i cant use the micand i can install a sound card to replace the onboard audio. or i can buy a new motherboard. there is 1 last thing i want to try it is to update the bios maybe there is an issue with the bios itself.
