Headphones popping in and out during quiet music

Is this just the quality of the headphones or is this something I can fix? I am currently using my graphics card's audio output through a couple Altec Lansing speakers into my headphones. Any idea what the source of the popping might be?

the jack could be loose, or the port is old or dirty. try cleaning it out with some air. try plugging the headphones straight into the computer not through the speaker, if the popping goes away, then there is a bad jack or other problem in the speaker.

the head jack would have been covered with dust. try dry cleaning it if possible.
