Headset can only use either sound or microphone at once and not together

Hello there, my friend has a problem with his cheap Gioteck hc2+ headset, that makes it so he cannot use the headset whilst using the microphone and vice versa. It has only has one cable but his sound systems requires him to use a splitter like this

The splitter makes it so both the microphone and sound work but there is chronic mic static.

Any tips?

Can you please pass on his full systems specs including the OS? Did he plug in the headset into the corresponding ports at the front or the read of the system? Since the headset is inoperable due to static either when talking or listening I'd say the issue is located in the sound cards drivers. Are you sure the drivers are up to date?
