Headset Microphone Doesn't Work

I got a headset a couple of years back for gaming and it worked fine (has the two cords not USB) but when that laptop died moved to a new laptop and the headset works fine but my mic doesn't work and any program that uses a microphone has a fit if I try to use this mic.

The mic may be muted in the mixer? Or the laptop has a built-in mic for the webcam and that is selected as the standard recording device (control panel / sounds)

no I've tried all that. nothing is muted and I set the mic as default but if I go into the settings for the mic I can't change the receiving volume for the mic (it's just blank) and everything either uses the laptop's built in mic or just tells me that there is a problem with the audio device.
