Question Headset not working

I use a laptop. When I plug in my headset, audio plays back through my headset and the headset mic works perfectly. When I connected my laptop via HDMI to my monitor, I noticed that the audio was playing back through my headset but my headset microphone wasn't working, instead it was using my laptop mic. I would like to know how to make my headset mic work when my laptop is plugged in via HDMI

what model laptop is it?

need to figure out what to look at, as the sound could be controlled by the graphics or laptop itself.

Its an Acer aspire 7 Serial number:
I7 8750h
8 gb ram

i maybe should have asked what monitor it is as well.

what is default input device in settings/system/sound?
