Question headset plugged into new monitor. sound works but wont detect the mic

hey everyone. the problem is as stated above. i bought a new monitor and it has both mic and headphone ports in and out. i have the mic and headset plugged into the out ports and the headphones work perfectly even with dolby atmos turned on. but unfortunately the computer wont even detect the mic at all. in the recording tab there is no mics what so ever. the mobo doesnt have it's own sound card but i have a r9 280x graphics card plugged in by hdmi to the monitor. i know the headset mic works too because i've plugged it into a friends computer and it works fine. i've tried troubleshooting and reinstalling my graphics driver but it hasnt changed the problem. any solutions would be much appreciated =D
