my headset has a single jack, pc two jacks , one for headphones one for microphones
i have bought a splitter cable to ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA39V2UW5352&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-VigLink2-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3821802&SID=ijm1zawhvy000aau00053 ) to attach my headset to both jacks, however when i do this the microphone only records the sounds my pc makes. is my only option buying an external sound card to fix this(wil it fix it at all)? if so can you recommend decent sound card for £40 or lower.

a last resort is that i buy this ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/U7-Soundcard-Integrated-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B00CP53ML2/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1453247868&sr=8-12&keywords=external+sound+card ) it's just a bit too pricey. or will the separate headphone and microphone jack cause the same problem when i'm using a splitter cable from my headset to this?

Can you please pass on your full systems specs including your OS, audio equipment and the chassis that you're trying to connect it to? If it's a laptop then please pass on the units make and model number. Have you made sure your audio device's drivers are up to date alongside your BIOS? It'd be a good idea to not go for an external sound card prior to figuring out what's wrong with your system or possibly the headset thus avoiding any unnecessary expenditure.

The issue may be within the connector for your headset...

Is it connected all the way?

One other thing is, are you trying to record what you're saying on the mic as well? See if this feature is active on your system.

operating system windows 10.

recording equipment : http://en-uk.sennheiser.com/urbanite-xl has a built in mic. ( this isnt the problem as i've tried it on other pc's and it works) . my headset connector looks like the last two connectors on the right. however the splitter cable im using (explained in first post) looks like the first two connectors shown on the left. If i connect my headset directly into my microphone jack without using the adaptor so im only using the microphone, it does register my voice and not my pc out put sound, but my voice is extremely muffled with lots of static in the background to the point where you could couldn't tell what im saying. the jack will only pick up my microphone and not the headphones attaches to it (worth a mention)

i've been using the build in windows update system to keep everything up to date. so that should cover all my drivers being up to date, right?

and yes that feature is active in my system , that you are showing in the final image.
