Headset vs headphone & mic

Hi there,

I'm a little lost in the headset and headphne world, but with my Logitech G930's breaking last night I am back on the hunt.

What I am exploring at the moment is a set of quality audio headphones (and dedicated sound card if I find my onboard sound on my Asus z87 Expert Motherboard is not enough) And an external mic to sit on my desk for gaming

If that is not viable then I will be looking at a decent headset that wll offer a decent audio quality

Do you have any suggestions? My budget is entirely flexible based upon performance but obviously best bang for buck is key

I was looking at Audio Technica ATH-AD700 Dynamic Headphones

Or for headsets Astro A40's or Thermaltake Level 10 M

Any insight would be greatly ap[appreciated,

Regards

Never buy beats. Go with Sennheiser - for wired I recommend the Sennheiser HD 598, and for wireless I recommend the Sennheiser RS 170 or RS 180.

Beats headphones sound HORRIBLE, you're paying for the brand - not quality.
headphones i like: http://www.amazon.com/Beats-Studio-2-0-OverEar-Headphone/dp/B00E9262IE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428278244&sr=8-1&keywords=beats+studios
microphone: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowball-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B006DIA77E/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1428278324&sr=1-1&keywords=blue+snowball
i know beats are overrated to some people but i really like there sound quality for gaming and music. For the blue snowball its just an all around good mic and it is cheaper then you would expect.

Personally I would go with Sennheiser over any other company. They're much better than Audio-Technica and Astro. Astro has good mic quality [apparently], but the actual sound isn't very good. Headphones will always have better sound than headsets.

Thanks everyone for your replies

Beats are not an option for me as I agree completely with Icaraeus' viewpoint in that they are over priced and at best average.

I have come back to Logitech with a warranty request, as it isn't really hardware (the plastic connection for one of the ear cups disintegrated last night and as such it no longer sits rigid (it is held by only the wire now), I don't anticipate much traction there

I have elected to go for the Seinnheiser 598, after reading reviews directly comparing them to my aforementioned ATH-AD700. My reasoning being that the 598's received fairly consistent audio praise whereas the AD700's received very high praise for the quality, but due to a potential lack of lows and the open air design, where not as safe to bet on.

Also helped that due to an Easter special, both were essentially the same price

Thanks all for your input,

Regards

I actually RMA'ed a pair of G430's for the exact same reason-the piece of plastic where they swivel just cracked and fell apart. I had to take a picture and send it to them, along with proof of purchase, and they sent me a brand new headset. If nothing else, you'll have a really nice spare.
