Headset with 1 plug and a combo jack

My laptop has a combo jack will a headset and mic combo with 1 plug work on it?(the headset probably designed for phones)

Yes, you need a headset with a combo jack-plug to match the combo jack on your laptop.

But be aware that headsets designed for mobile phones may not work on a laptop or desktop PC as far as the microphone is concerned if it has an in-line microphone switch/button on the headset cord. In that case you need to buy a headset designed for a computer (with microphone on a stalk).
