I've had similar experiences with this on my desktop running Windows 7 as well...One solution is unplugging the speakers from the audio jack, and plugging your headphones into it. It's quite a hassle though, as the audio jack you're using might be on the back of the computer and will be tough for a headphones cord to reach. If you can't do that solution, I've found that simply removing it and plugging it back in several times worked too.
