I just bought a vantec copper heat sink/fan combo for my ATX socket A mobo. It is quite heavy and I concerned that when I install it and place it in my tower case, it may put too much gravitational pressure on the socket (since it will be hanging at a 90 degree angle). Is this a reasonable concern? If so, is there anything you can buy or install which would support the heat sink? And where would one buy such an item?

thanks

It will be fine as long as you are not moving your case around. If it is really heavy and you have to do more than slide the case around the floor a little bit (going to LAN party, carrying around the house etc.) then consider removing the HS first, or at minimum re-confirm seating before use.

but the thing is, that removing and replacing the heatsink over and over, is when you will most likely damage the core...is you are really scared, then get a shim....
just make sure that it is a quality one, so that it isnt too thick!
