Recently i have had tons of trouble with my cpu overheating... I clocked it back to normal, and still finding that it reaches high temperatures, even when idling.

I have an AMD athlon 1.4 @ 1600+ running WinXP. The ambient room temperature currently is 28C (83f), and my system (clocked normally and with nothing but explorer open) is idling at 49C (121f).
Now, temperatures around 50 - 54C (122 - 130 f) when under high stress strike me as normal... but not while the PC is doing nothing.

incidently, i have a thermaltake volcano 9 CPU cooler with arcticsilver thermal paste.
 
The T-bird 1.4ghz is known to produce quite a bit of heat...depending on what kind of HSF combo you have, the mentionned temperatures seem quite normal.

Well with that ambient temp it is explainable.. pretty high, is it summer there?
If your ambient increases your CPU temp will also increase.

1.4 was im pretty sure the hottest running tbird (if not hottest running amd cpu)...

how much thermal paste did you apply (you are only supposed to apply a very thin layer...like paper thin or less)
 
My P4 1.7 Ghz CPU goes up to 53-54 degree centigrade when I play games. In low load condition it heats up to 49-50 degrees. The room temp. is low about 20-25 degrees. Is it normal. What will happen in Summer ?. I have Intel original fan and heat sink.
 
I have also noticed huge differences in my cpu temps based on what the ambient temperature is. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it, as you can't do a whole lot about the ambient- unless you want to run the AC, but that seems a bit expensive?
 
Don't feel too bad, it's cold as crap here, and in my room (one wall with 4 windows) it gets really cold, like 40s 50s on some nights.

My computer is an Athlon 1.1 oc at 1227, and it idles at 42, and hits 49-52 if I'm gaming heavily. I've got a damn nice Volcano fan and I know people with higher cpus and crappy fans who get high 30s, it's crazy.

I applied the thin layer (as per the ArticSilver III instructions).

I see what you all meant in regards to ambient temperature having a big effect... it is now 30C in here and my comp is idling at 54.

Maybe i'll take out the standard case fan i have in front and throw in a bigger / faster one.

I've noticed that the amount of air being sucked in the front of the case is not even a fifth of that being spat out the back. Maybe I just need to improve the route the air flows through the system.
 
Ok I did some calculating for you and with an ambient of 28C, a CPU with a heat output of 63 W at full load and the heatexchange coefficient from ThermalTake of 0.38 C/W you should get a CPU temp of 52C

What is your HSF? the Volcano 7 or another one?
If I know which HSF you got I can calculate the CPU temp at full load if I know your VCore, CPU speed and ambient temp.

you mentioned a lack of exhaust from the back of the case, and i wanted to know how the fans were aranged in your case. if you want the lowest temps possible you would want more air going out of the case and less coming in.

Very simpel principla of math and physics. As you know each CPU creates a sertain amount of heat in W... with a program called Radiate you can check out how high the CPU heat will be at certain speeds and voltages, but it is just a global value and will differ with each CPU.
After knowing that you need to get the heat exchange rate of the heatsink in C/W, ie 0.37 C/W. This means that with each watt of heat the heatsink temp will increase with 0.37C.

Well after that it is just filling in the numbers and adding the ambient temp, ie: 65*0.37+20=44.05 C.
