I'm going to attach a better hsf on my video card but i realize that it wont stick w/o something keeping it attached to the chip. I see that there is an arctic silver thermal adhesive but thats about it. I don't want to spend 10 bucks for the two tubes ( i have some thermal compound already and i don't need/want more) so i'm just wondering if i can go out and just get some epoxy and put a small dab here and there on the hs and the chip. Is what arctic silver sells a better idea or can i just use plain epoxy? Thanks

You can use JB-weld, which is a metal-filled epoxy available at auto parts stores, hardware stores, and some department stores. Make the coating as thin as possible. It's similar to the silicon filled epoxy used for many years by card manufacturers, both in holding power and thermal conductivity.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

you could mix a little epoxy in with the compound, if you make it thin enough it should be fine. epoxy by itself would not work and would start to smell really bad when it burned.

i went to the tomshardware forums and all i got was this lousy signature.

so it would be a bad idea if i just put a dab of epoxy in one corner and thermal compund on the rest of the chip?
