Hi, I have a Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard (2012), it has a chunky heat sink and the fan is suspended on four rubber standoffs. I keep getting the error message "CPU fan error press F1". The fan runs, but it is not quiet (but will get quieter the longer it runs). I cannot see the same unit online, can anybody recommend a modern replacement that will fit this mothreboard ?

Your Mobo uses LGA1155 socket. So, any CPU cooler that supports it, will work (essentially every CPU cooler out there).

Though, can't suggest proper one, since:
  1. I don't know the CPU you're running.
  2. I don't know your PC case CPU cooler limit.
  3. Your RAM sticks height.
  4. Budget.
Without any this info, i'd suggest Noctua NH-D15S (chromax.black), since this will cool anything. (King of air coolers.) Btw, it's 160mm tall, so it may not fit in your PC case (well, it fits, but you may not be able to close side panel afterwards).
