Hi all, I am about to change my motherboard next week and will be transfering my Athlon XP 2500+ into it.

I am quite familiar with doing this, but wanted some professional advice.

My heatsink (Akasa 824cu) is currently using the heat transfer paste that came attached to the bottom. I have bought some arctic silver V for when I change the CPU over, and want to know the best way of cleanly removing the old paste from the heatsink base and CPU without causing any damage.
Also, how much of the new paste should I apply when the time comes? My current (cheap) paste, I apply a decent layer (1 or 2 mm maybe)over the core.
I was thinking it would only have to be quite a thin amount using the Arctic Silver V.

Thanks for any help.

On the heatsink remove the old compound with your fingernail so you don't scratch the surface, then thoroughly clean with rubbing alcohol and allow to dry, residue on the CPU clean with rubbing alcohol and Q tips (make sure no cotton residue from the Q tip is left behind), and allow to dry.

Put the Artic Silver on the die only, and you're after the thinnest even coverage you can get, you absolutely do not need the Artic Silver to be over a thickness of a thin sheet of notebook paper.
