Heatsink removal

Removing h/s pulls the cpu with it. Whats the likelihood of damaging those wee pins on the cpu? How often is it safe to do this? I mean, the cpu is clamped in the socket and the clamp/release lever is inaccessable when h/s is in place.

You can often remove the sink separately if you twist it a little after unclamping it. If you do end up pulling it out with the sink, you're not likely to be pulling on any one pin hard enough to remove it.

The heatsink material used on your CPU is probably the thick/high density type.

In future, try thiner thermal paste. You can get high qual types that allow for easier removal.

If you didn't slaver it on or run it till you baked the paste to a rock hard consistency, you should be able to remove the HS and Fan no problemo. Run it the machine a bit so the paste is good n' warm. Open up, lay flat, say "ahhhh" unclip and twist slightly while applying pressure "straight up" and voila, it should remove itself from the CPU or it's cover, no problemo.
