Heatsink socket won't go in

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I registered just to help with my heatsink.

Today, I decided to reapplied thermal paste on my cpu. After applying it, I tried to put back the heatsink but only 3 of the pins went in. After 30 minutes of pressing, I just gave up and locked all the pins. My CPU temp is idling at 40 Celsius right now. Should I try to try to fix it again after it thermal paste dries or just leave it alone?

The heatsink is stock for the E8400 Intel Core 2 Duo.

How could we tell you if you need to fix it if we don't even know what the temps were before????

It was 44 Celsius on idle before. I think the fourth pin is broken. Should I get a new heatsink right away?

No, thermal paste need time to "break in". Wait a while, and see if temps go down.
