Question heatsinks on motherboard?

there's two heatsinks on the motherboard and ones fallen off. Is it important? does it keep the motherboard cool ? There's been no problems yet but
Im scared if It burns my motherboard.
 
What did the heatsink cover? Your CPU or your GPU? Heatsinks are there to transfer the heat from the chip away from the chip. There should be a failsafe which keeps the laptop or PC from overheating. If you are really unsure about this you could install a case fan.

It pretty much depends. In the past heatsinks on components like PCH chipset were important. But newer boards don't really heat the chipsets as previously because so much of their functions have moved onto the CPU and other reasons. On such places the 'heatsink' serves a much more aesthetic function than heat transfer.

What is your motherboard and can you describe where the heatsink is? Maybe point to it in a picture?
