I'd agree, except that since these sims are more intense than those
made during the mid-90's we'd probably make up the shortfall by talking
more about a smaller number of specific games.

You also have to consider that simming has hit a bottleneck of sorts.
We were spoiled by years of ever-improving sims. (So much so that game
critics who freely admitted to not even having a private pilots license
were nevertheless remarkably jaded about their high-flying sims.)
Graphics had to be better, campaigns more dynamic, AI more intelligent,
flight models more realistic. At the same time the basic interface
really didn't change much - we're still confined to a 2d screen, using
some control devices as an interface, but conspicuously still tied to a
computer. In the early 90's - when high end systems topped out about
200mhz - talk of VR promised immersive wrap-around graphics. Until
that talk becomes widely available and reasonably priced product, every
new sim will be hobbled by its being trapped by the four corners of
your screen. We can improve graphics, make them more life-like, but
that will just make the edges of screen more obviously confining.
