Is it only me who has noticed a dramatic fall in people contributing to this
NG?
Maybe its some kind of holiday lull

Yep, it has fallen way off.
At one time, you could count on 100+ posts a day here.

Well, i can say that all the usual suspects seem to be posting - including
the schizophrenic.

Maybe down to the lack of recent and new sims coming on the market. I fear
that flight simming is too expensive for the small market share it attracts
for the software companies to develop new stuff. We are a dying breed.

Ah, the annual (at a minimum) "the sky is falling" post finally appears.
Been hearing these lines of thoughts, oh, since the late eighties at least.

Maybe they're just contributing to forums on dedicated flight sim
sights. Considering how much time it takes just to get into a sim life
F4, I'm still surprised anybody finds time to post anything anywhere.

I'd agree, except that since these sims are more intense than those
made during the mid-90's we'd probably make up the shortfall by talking
more about a smaller number of specific games.

You also have to consider that simming has hit a bottleneck of sorts.
We were spoiled by years of ever-improving sims. (So much so that game
critics who freely admitted to not even having a private pilots license
were nevertheless remarkably jaded about their high-flying sims.)
Graphics had to be better, campaigns more dynamic, AI more intelligent,
flight models more realistic. At the same time the basic interface
really didn't change much - we're still confined to a 2d screen, using
some control devices as an interface, but conspicuously still tied to a
computer. In the early 90's - when high end systems topped out about
200mhz - talk of VR promised immersive wrap-around graphics. Until
that talk becomes widely available and reasonably priced product, every
new sim will be hobbled by its being trapped by the four corners of
your screen. We can improve graphics, make them more life-like, but
that will just make the edges of screen more obviously confining.

Considering the "hard drive life" of top-notch sims, I don't feel too
bothered that we don't get new ones that often. It takes weeks to get to
grips with something as complex as Falcon, so why would I want to
continually try to pick up something new? I'm still playing F4, and am
nowhere near getting the most out of it. Could do with a new military helo
game though..

This biggest problem with sims is OS compatibility. You only have to look
here at the amount of "Can I get Longbow 2 to run on Windows XP" type posts
to see that decent sims outlast the supporting technology.

Have you tried either of the "Enemy Engaged" sims? I have Apache/Havoc
- tried it a couple of years ago and liked it, but it was hard to play
on my old screen (it was hard to spot those AAA batteries before I got
shot down), and I never got myself back into it once I replaced the
monitor.

MS Flight Sim 4 was the title that sent me to my local Airport (Q99) to get
my SEL ticket ;) Real life is a lot better but the flight time is much to
short (for much too much cash) including the prep in FS2004 the night before
just to make it last a bit longer.

Yes I have. I've still got Comanche-Hokum, which is/was great. I've not
played it in a couple of years to be honest. I hear there's a lot of
third-party improvements I really should check-out, but I've been
concentrating on my GA flying with FS2004 lately as I'm doing my PPL(H).

You really need to.
EECH, with all the mods out now, and Track IR3, is an awesome helo sim.

I just googled EECH and got a bunch of hits. As for XP - that was the
OS under which I first played the game (Apache/Havoc), so you shouldn't
have compatibility issues.

Is there a good EECH website that deals with these mods? (Which ones should
I install, and how do I get it going under XP, etc?)

Thanks,
