We are wanting to upgrade my son's computer. The current GPU and CPU- GTX 1050 and AMD Athlon X4 845. The new GPU will be a 1060TI, which CPU would be a good match? And would any additional upgrades be necessary if those 2 are made? Thanks in advance

Yes, 1660. Would upgrading the GPU only, produce any noticeable difference,95 watt power supply.? Thank you and sorry for my computer illiteracy. I am not sure what he trying to achieve ,maybe faster or smoother.

As far as CPU goes, there's nothing on the socket that would be a worthwhile 'upgrade', which would necessitate a Motherboard/RAM upgrade also, unfortunately.

What PSU is powering the setup?

What is it you're trying to achieve with the upgrade?

I can recommend upgrading to the AM4 platorm with the 1660. But a 95 watt power supply, if that's the case you're going to want a now power supply as well.

Is Son computer literate?
If so, get him to help with the decision.

Sounds like you need a complete build.
A 95w psu will not run any gpu stronger than a gtx1050.

Do you have a budget?
If you/son can not build a pc yourself, consider a good pre built replacement.
Lenovo legion series are decent.
You can get a whole pc with i5-9400 processor and GTX1660ti graphics for $873

A 95W PSU wouldn't adequately power a GTX 1050 and 845, so I'm assuming that's a typo, or just an unknown.

As has been mentioned, a full new system (perhaps reusing a Case, HDDs etc) would be the recommended way to go.

What kind of budget did you have in mind? Obviously, moving from replacing just a GPU to an entire new build need differing budgets, and without knowing what a 'budget' might look like to you, it's really tough to give any recommendations.

Both DMAN and geofelt have put forward solid options for their respective pricepoint.

If computer literate, and prepared to assemble, the cheapest pricepoint I'd recommend building these days, is right around $600 - assuming you reuse the HDD from the old build. Potential to reuse the case, depending on what it is. If the case remains functional/compatible, it's not going to be any worse in performance than most cheap new offerings.

My Son had his Grandma order him a GPU for Christmas. The MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Ti . I found this out and thought there had to be more to it than popping in a new card. So, he will have the most expensive part already bought, I think his current computer has a 1TB hard drive,cd dvd drive,it seems like the power supply may be iffy. Or sell the card and put the money towards a prebuilt.

Honestly assembling a PC is pretty easy as long as you take your time and follow those guides.
And you and your son will most likely end up enjoying doing it together. 😀

And if you use his existing Hard Drive, Video card and DVD Drive you could get something like this:
