Um your MB is an AM2 Mobo, the processor is AM3, the motherboard does not support the new processor.

Hmm there is different versions of this board with the same name i get a few sites saying only AM2 socket and others saying it supports AM3.

If you have only the AM2 socket one which it sounds like, then no. you would need a new mobo.

First you need to identify your board and the version. There should be a number on the MB and it will say version or rev. with a number the ones I see for your board are 4.1, 4.0, 2.0, or 1.x then once you find that let us know.

Then check the cpu support list and then you can figure out if you need a bios update. If your board is just AM2+ you can usually run an AM3 processor but it will downgrade the the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0 (5200MT/s) to HT1.0 (2000 MT/s) spec which will slow the system down. In that case it would be better to pick up a new MB. Click the link below and try to identify which rev. of the board you have.

The cpu is not on the support list for your motherboard. What you can try is updating to the newest bios and see if for some odd reason it works. Most likely you will not be able to use that chip in your motherboard. The PII X4 920 and PII X4 940 are supported by your board so if you wanted a PII I would return your chip and go with one of them or you can upgrade your motherboard to handle the chip you have now.

What Bios version does it show you are runnning now - it looks like you might need a new Bios update in order to support the newer CPUs - lokks like the F4 BIOS is the one you need (as the F5b is still in BETA it is probably safer to go with the F4 version for know if it works) - If you are running anything older than the F4 version you will need to flash the BIOS to update it to support the new CPU.

Even if you can run it your bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0 (5200MT/s) to HT1.0 (2000 MT/s) and you will be limited to running DDR2 800 memory. I would just pick up a new mb if I were you. Get one that will run DDR3 unless you don't have the cash and in that case recycle your ddr2.
