HELP ! ASUS M5A97 R2.0 no BIOS/post

I've installed pretty much everything but had some problems with it. So I took it out from the case and just used the necessary materials to get to the BIOS (PSU, graphics card, CPU, memory) but I still don't see anything from my monitor. The green LED on the motherboard is lit but I don't see any memory LED glowing. All of the fans are spinning but nothing seems to work. I tried to change the placement of the graphics card to the 2nd PCIe slot but no display still. All the power connectors are completely connected properly. I don't know what to do anymore.


My Parts:


CPU: AMD FX-6300 Black Edition

Memory: G Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 2133mhz

PSU: Corsair CX600M 600watts

Graphics card: MSI Radeon HD 7870

i have basically the EXACT same setup. same mobo, fx 6300, ASUS HD 7870 ghz, 620 watt antec PSU. Everything worked first time i powered on as described. I then updated the bios shortly after with a flash drive, that is something that should be working for you. Are both 4 pin connectors from the psu in the 8 pin mobo connector? what brand PSU? and watt

Please remove your CMOS (battery on board) to rest your board settings. Or you can even re-plug every single component on your board. If that doesn't help, contact ASUS and they will send you a blank CPU socket restorer. If that doesn't work be sure to contact them again and they will replace your board.

Yeah they're connected properly. And my PSU is Corsair CX600M 600watts. do you also have the same memory as I do?

Please remove your CMOS (battery on board) to rest your board settings. Or you can even re-plug every single component on your board. I haven't tried that CMOS thing yet. But I called ASUS today and they said that something must be wrong with the memory or the graphics card which I don't think is the real problem here seeing that the GPU fans are spinning. The fact that GPU fans are spinning doesn't mean it couldn't the GPU. It simply means your GPU it's powered up which is why fans are spinning. But yea, try the CMOS thing as you said. It might help. Now, ASUS has the most costumer support helpers in my opinion, they will get it solve or replace your hardware.

thats a quality PSU and my RAM is G.Skill ripjaws 2 x 4GB 1600MHz

I will try that as soon as I get some sleep. I didn't really had that much sleep cause I was too psyched about my first build. But if it doesn't work by any chance, what else should I do ?

could it be possible that my memory is not compatible with my motherboard? I mean I haven't seen my memory model on the Asus qualified list of memories. BUT it says that this motherboard supports speeds of 2133mhz. so I'm really confused of what really went wrong here.

If it's manufacturing issues, they will for sure replace your board. If you bought your board through Amazon, you can get a replacement before 30 days of purchased day or you can get your money back. Whenever you wake up tomorrow, you will for sure be more patient and try removing your CMOS battery and re-plugin all of your hardware and power connectors. That should also be a factor into solving your issue.

Also, I realize someone else got this working with an FX-6300 CPU but the support page says a BIOS update is needed, so you may need to contact Asus to find out which BIOS version your exact board ships with. Either the Revision or Serial No info should help Asus verify this.

Not all monitors auto-detect a card either. You may have to CYCLE the monitor inputs though I would have expected it to say "No Signal" regardless.

That's what I have been thinking too cause I think my memory is probably not compatible with my motherboard. My memory is 2133mhz but I haven't seen my memory model on the Asus qualified list of memories. ok so I tried the CMOS that you told me about, but it still didn't worked. I also found out that my BIOS revision is 1.00 so I updated it with a newer one but no luck. I'm still thinking about getting a new memory because I REALLY think this is the only thing that is not compatible with my setup. What do you think ?

As far as I'm concerned, FX series CPU's as well as your mobo do not support 2133MHz. FX series will go as up to 1866MHz suppotted ram. When using 4 dimms of 1866MHz(supported speed) ram it will auto downgrade to either 1333MHz or 1600MHz in most cases.

How did you update your BIOS if you can't see anything on the screen?

You need BIOS version 1006, but again if you can't see the screen how do you know what you have?

Memory compatibility:
The QVL list for compatibility isn't all inclusive. In general, any DDR3 memory should work well enough to at least boot (in some cases there may be errors due to timing issues).

When DDR3 memory isn't recognized by the BIOS it just defaults to a default lower frequency.

I'm not saying it's NOT your memory, just that I doubt it is the issue. If in doubt, contact the motherboard manufacturer but I bet they say basically what I'm saying here.

*I think you need to contact Asus about this, as I'm thinking it may be that the BIOS is too old. Asus has some motherboards that can use "USB BIOS FLASHBACK" and work without a CPU or memory, but this is not one of them.

If the BIOS isn't 1006 or newer, you must have a compatible CPU installed already to flash the BIOS so that the FX-6300 works otherwise your computer just doesn't work.

**I'm told some computer places will flash the BIOS for you for about $25. They hook it up with a compatible CPU, flash the BIOS so it's now compatible with your FX and give it back to you.

Figuring out if your DDR3 memory is the culprit on a M5A97 R2.0 is quite easy, which I think is most likely the cause when you're experiencing symptoms like this. When you power up the PC the red memory OK LED should light for a second or two, this LED is located close to your DIMM slots.

I have built a ton of computers and to this date I only had this problem twice, both were caused by a faulty memory bank. One of those I accidentally killed with a nice ESD when I was in a rush. RAM is very sensitive to ESD ...

If you have 2 memory banks try removing one and boot up the PC. If that doesn't work replace the bank with the second one and repeat. The red memory OK LED has to light up. I really don't think this problem is caused by incompatible memory, I myself have used this board for over a year and use 2x 4GB Kingston HyperX 2166 MHz with Intel XMP. This type is nowhere to be found on the memory compatibility list, which isn't so strange since they are made for intel CPU's. However through D.O.C.P even the 2 XMP profiles of the chips can be selected and they run both perfectly fine and stable (BIOS defaults the these to 1333 MHz).

In my experience and from what I have seen RAM is one of the most common defective parts on a new build. Avoid ESD and touching the pins at all cost when handling RAM (and other parts of course).

You should try a different power supply, i was having the same exact problem so i talked to a specialist and he said It's difficult to know what the issue might be without seeing it and hearing it power up. But typically when a computer does not show anything on the screen, doesn't POST, it's something to do with the power supply (defective, not providing enough power to the computer), a faulty motherboard, or a faulty CPU. If the memory was bad, you would usually hear some beeps to indicate bad memory stick. But since the computer isn't even trying to POST, that is usually an issue with power supply, motherboard, or cpu.
