Help! Battlefield black screen :(

So I recently got Battlefield 1942 again for my PC, one of my favourite and nostalgic games of all time. The problem is whenever I pres ESC to exit a map or press abort after a match is won or lost, I get a black screen with either silence or the menu music or in game sounds on repeat. The screen basically locks up, I think it's because I'm running it on 1080p in game, but the main menu resolution can't actually be changed, only in game. So when I exit a map I guess the computer has a little meltdown when trying to change resolutions. Does anyone know a way to fix this?
I'm running it in Windows 10 and YES I've set it to Windows 98/Me compatibility mode.
