Help before I buy please?

I am looking to buy a new gaming machine and need to decide bewtween Intel Core i7 920 (2.66GHz) with a nVidia GTX295 (1792MB) card or a Intel Pentium Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83GHz) with ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (2GB) cards. There is only a couple of hundred between the 2, so I'll rather go for the best option. Does anyone have a view?

I7 all the way... you won't get a better rig than that (except an i7 965 and SLI GTX 295.)

That does not compute. The i7/GTX295 is a much more capable system, and should cost much more.
How much will each system cost, and what are you getting for the price?

There are some other differences of course, e.g. 1MB RAM, Vista and the likes. But my focus is purely on gaming here.

For pure gaming, The i7/GTX295 is much better.

Consider getting the optional 24" monitor. The GTX295 can handle it easily.

If they are assembling this just for you, see if you can't get the 64 bit version of vista home premium and an extra 3gb.

I have no idea if this is fair value in australian dollars, perhaps some Aussies out there can help out.
