My new (since August) i860 printer has suddenly developed a case of
the mis-feeds. It feeds ok sometimes then clunks noisily, misfeeds (paper
is sent back and forth through the printer, trying to find the start point,
or the paper simply get skewed (sent in crooked) and jams in the rollers
and the print head comes to a screeching, grinding halt when it hits
the jam. This can't be good ;-). It's not the paper, I've been using the
same high quality paper as with all my previous Canons.

If you have checked and found no obstructions, then it sounds like it is in
need of service. Give Canon a call, if it is a service issue you have the
option of having a replacement sent via Next Day at no charge (at least here
in the states)
