I have no idea where to start when it comes to choosing a power supply. I am building a PC for gaming. I know that my video card says I need at least a 500W power supply... other than that I am in the dark. Could anyone please tell me a good power supply to choose? I would also like to know how many watts I'll need for this rig, and any other information you think could help me would be much appreciated. Thanks

Here are the parts I will be using. (If there is anything I should have listed but didn't please tell me.)

Mobo: ASUS P9X79 LE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131855

Processor: Intel Core i7-3820 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115229&Tpk=Intel%20Core%20i7-3820

Video Card: 2GB DDR5 Radeon HD 7870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131467

RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104173

Hard Drive: HGST Deskstar 2TB 7200 RPM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145369

A 500W PSU should be just fine in ur case.

The power needed by the video cards is usualy exaggeraed by the company.

It wont use more than 180W, even at full power. The HD 7 series is designed to consume less power.

Make sure the power supply you buy is from a good quality brand. Often power supply's are rated in unrealistic conditions and just die when you plug it in.

Good Brands are - XFX, Corsair, Siverstone, Antec, CoolerMaster and OCZ

Corsair TX650V2

Its a very high quality unit & will provide enough power to your rig & will also be sufficient for two 7870s if you plan to crossfire in the future.

If there's no plan to crossfire in the future & are looking for a cheaper PSU, then get the Seasonic M12II 520W

Again, A very high quality unit, quite sufficient for you rig & its modular as well.

cheers:)

I'm curious about the 1155> LGA 2011. Could explain why and maybe recommend a few products for me to look at as a reference for what kind of specs I should be looking for? I'd have to change my mobo and processor.

LGA2011 is for server based systems or workstations.1155 is best platform for gaming.a 3570k or 2500k will give you the best possible gaming cpu performance for less.
7870 is good but i guess you can fit a 670 in your budget.
what's your max budget?

I'll post all the parts I have. I was hoping to stay around $1500 but I suppose I'll be willing to go up to about $1800.

I have changed some stuff since the first post.

Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 922 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197

Cooling System: ZALMAN CNPS20LQ Ultimate Liquid CPU Cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118129

Again, this is my first time selecting ALL the parts to build a computer. Please suggest... well anything and feel free to correct me and add necessities or take away stupid stuff.

If possible I'd like to build a top of line computer(or close) for about $1500 and have it last me ages with little to no upgrading for the next couple years. I'm looking mostly to play MMOs at top performance but also dabble in various other things like photoshop, graphics design and such. I'm basically looking to be able to run several games at once or watch tv and run games at the same time. (Let's factor internet connection out of this, lol.) In the end I'd like to stop using a console forever and play everything on my computer as I did in the past.

$1,400-$1,800 is the budget.

this board-

and for 670 vs 7870,IMHO the 670 is worth the price tag.

670 rocks even with stock clocks.with some overclocking,it beats a stock 680!
what more can i say?

Okay so I decided to go 3770 instead of 3770k (there was only one difference and I didn't think it made too much of a difference, correct me if I'm wrong.)

Also will the 750w PSU be able to support all of this?

I went with the changes you recommended, Hellfire. That being the board you posted and the 670 video card.

I would say go for the K version. It gives you the option to boost your CPU performance.
You may not have any plans for overclocking now, but the"K" version keeps the option open for the future.
That little price difference is worth it.

You can opt for a GTX570 or GTX580 if you want to save some $$$

For a single GPU rig the Seasonic M12II 520W is sufficient.

Its a high quality modular PSU & its fairly cheap.
